If you're a fan of "The Walking Dead" or "Z Nation" or the film "28 Days Later" you are probably aware that George Romero, who passed away July 16 from lung cancer, is considered the father of the zombie genre. Romero was inspired by Richard Matheson's novel "I AM LEGEND". (Gauntlet Press has published 34 books by Matheson including two books which contain his unproduced screenplay adaptation of his acclaimed novel). Romer co-authored his screenplay with John A. Russo and directed the ground breaking film in 1968 on a shoestring budget of $114,000. The film has achieved cult status among fans and has recently spawned numerous film and TV projects dealing with a zombie apocalypse. While I never knew Romero personally he generously agreed to take part and sign tipsheets for Gauntlet's forthcoming "Night of the Living Dead" novel, written by John A. Russo. Romero will be sorely missed, but his work and influence will live on for generations.
